Specs, founded in 1987 with headquarters in Rijswijk, the Netherlands, is one of the world’s leading suppliers of screening compounds and research chemicals (Building blocks and Natural products) to the Life Science industry. With true chemical diversity in-house- single synthesized, well-characterized and drug-like small molecules - Specs’ repository is built through global acquisition programs utilizing a network of more than 20,000 researchers working in universities and academic centers around the world. Each month, 5,000 to 10,000 carefully selected novel compounds from all corners of the globe are added to the dynamic collection.
Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and world-class expertise Specs provides customers with custom-tailored services and breakthrough solutions, allowing them to concentrate on the development of their core (research) activities.
Screening Compounds
Currently their are over 160,000 screening compounds in the database available in 20 mg or more.
Building blocks
Specs offers a diverse and unique set of 6,000+ heterocyclic Building blocks (small (hetero) cyclic (fused) ring compounds with one or more chemical handles) such as imidazoles, pyridines etc. They are offered in multi-gram (1-50 g) quantities (purity >95%) which make the suitable for high-throughput and combinatorial synthesis of pharmaceutical libraries or scale-up of lead compounds for further development.
Natural products
Specs offers a diverse and unique set of 350+ isolated Natural Products or derivatives of these, from natural sources like plants, fungi, bacteria, sea organisms, etc. These compounds can range from common to very complex and rare Natural products (purity >80%).
Quality
All compounds that are supplied by Specs have undergone quality control by LC/MS and/or H-NMR to confirm the structure of the compound and ensure that the purity is >90%.
CTL can deliver compounds in every requested format either in vials, 96 or 384-well plates (dry film or DMSO solution), or a combination of both. Specs has developed a refined methodology for the transfer of solid samples eliminating human error.
Compounds can be supplied in both milligram (mg or mg/ml) and micromolar (µmol or mM) amounts.
Cheminformatics
Specs has built up extensive knowledge and experience in Cheminformatics by using commercial as well as proprietary, in-house developed software to evaluate millions of structures offered each year, enabling companies to select the most drug-like and diverse compounds for lead discovery programs.
When requested by a customer, all available software tools be used to create from the Specs compound inventory, the appropriate focused or targeted libraries.
Specs can also provide consulting services to customers for the selection of compounds from third party suppliers. Specs uses its SORT&gen proprietary technology with a unique approach to classify (SORT) compound collections and thereafter to generate (gen) the novel chemical classes not present in the compound collection.
And there is Specs.net, a unique Internet application that enables on-line searching among and ordering of Specs ’compounds from the compound inventory as well as providing analytical data on the compounds. The Specs.net Internet platform has also been utilized to build the electronic version of the Journal of Heterocyclic Chemistry (www.jhetchem.com), the first complete electronic chemical journal in the world.
Specs Research Laboratory
The Specs Research Laboratory (SRL) provides versatile and state-of-the art facilities for synthesis and research activities on screening compounds and Building Blocks. The chemistry performed at SRL supports the whole portfolio of Specs products.
Currently, SRL offers two chemistry services - Custom Synthesis, the outsourcing of the synthesis of known and validated compounds and Contract Research, the outsourcing of parts of the customer’s own research program (e.g. feasibility studies, reaction scopes and optimizations). SRL can be used for the follow-up on hit molecules from lead discovery programs.
Service
A screening library only has value for a customer if good quality hits are identified that can be developed into leads. Usually the first step after identifying a hit is to reconfirm the activity for which additional compound is required. Specs retains for every compound in stock a small quantity that is only accessible for customers that have acquired the compounds from Specs before. The re-supply rate is >90%.
Furthermore, Specs finds it very important that every aspect of a transaction is done in the most efficient and expedient way. A lot of attention is given to maintain short delivery times, meet deadlines, provide proper documentation to ensure easy custom clearance (if required), etc. This attention to detail ensures that the customer can focus on their core activities.
