Statement of Need for a National Chemical Database Service

The EPSRC has recently initiated a review of its current 'Mid Range facilities'. The Chemical Database Service (CDS) at Daresbury is one of these facilities.

In response to the EPSRC review, members of the chemistry community have put in place an electronic 'iPetition'. The purpose of this petition is to provide a mechanism for the UK academic community to register its support for continued access to the kind of database facilities currently provided by the CDS.

When you sign the petition you will be registering your view that the EPSRC should finance a national chemical database service. There is no implication that it will necessarily be provided by any specific site or organisation. However, you have the opportunity to add your comments about current provision and what you would like to see available in the future.

Overview of Current CDS Service

All categories of users are invited to respond to this call. They range from undergraduate students to university vice-chancellors. It should only take a minute or two of your time.

It is vital that you make your feelings known as a matter of urgency. By signing the petition you will signal to the EPSRC that there is a real demand and need for such resources.

It is vital that the community expresses its full support for a UK national chemical database service to ensure future funding. Please sign our iPetition as soon as you can. If you have comments for the Statement of Need do so before 10th June. We will, however, continue to accept signatures and any comments after that date.

If you have comments you believe may be useful for the statement of need please make sure you sign the Petition before Monday 8th June. We need to submit the SoN document by 5.00 pm Friday 12th June. So we would like to have as many signatures supporting a future chemical database service before that date. We will, of course, continue to accept signatures beyond that point.
